Island Cuisine
Spices, so important to the Sri Lankan Kitchen, actually helped shape the history of the Island.
Famed as the traditional home the world’s best Cinnamon, Sri Lanka was known in the early days as the Spice Island. With the arrival of the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, it was Sri Lanka’s famous Cinnamon –the delicate fragrant bark of the Cinnamon Zeylanicum tree, native to the island-which became the prime source of revenue for the country.
With the spice trade evolving the geographical location of Sri Lanka played a pivotal role in Sri Lankan spices being a sought after commodity worldwide.
